Most developers I talk to use AI as autocomplete. Tab-tab-tab, accept the suggestion, move on. That's AI-assisted. It makes you faster at the thing you were already doing.

AI-first is different. AI-first means the AI is involved before I write a single line. It helps me think through the problem. It challenges my assumptions. It drafts the approach, I critique it, we iterate. By the time we're writing code, we've already stress-tested the design in conversation.

The difference isn't just productivity. It's quality of thinking. AI-assisted makes you a faster typist. AI-first makes you a better engineer. The bottleneck was never typing speed.
