Fable 5 was due to leave Claude subscriptions on July 7 and move to usage credits. Anthropic extended the included access through July 12.

Two days later, OpenAI launched GPT-5.6. Its own results put Sol ahead of Fable on several benchmarks, sometimes at a much lower estimated cost.

Anthropic has not said the extension was a response to GPT-5.6. Maybe the promotion was always going to continue. The timing still makes competition visible in something more useful than another benchmark chart.

The smartest model has limited value when ordinary use requires a second meter running beside the subscription. A credible alternative changes what providers can charge and how tightly they can close the tap.

We spent months complaining about model limits. Another provider shipping a serious alternative may have made the point faster.
