Anthropic launched Fable 5 on Tuesday. On Friday, it disabled the model for everyone after a US government directive restricted access for foreign nationals.

Three days.

Teams are rebuilding development processes around these models. Fable could review a codebase or carry a migration through several hours of work, right up until somebody outside your organisation changed whether you were allowed to use it.

Model access has failure modes our dependency diagrams rarely show. Access can disappear while the service status stays green. Switching to another model may keep work moving, but it also changes the behaviour of the system.

The specification and verification need to survive a provider change. Recording decisions in the repository lets another tool recover the context, but a fallback is only safe for work you already decided can continue.

We rent the capability. The keys belong to somebody else.
